Medical Update from OPITO regarding BOSIET/HUET/FOET with CA-EBS

Posted: August 16, 2018

Good news for those holding seafarer’s medicals. These can now be used when undertaking OPITO BOSIET/HUET/FOET with CA-EBS.

An additional HSE exemption has been granted to enable those workers who hold an ENG1 medical certificate of fitness to undertake the same in-water offshore survival training as those holding an Oil and Gas UK certificate of medical fitness for offshore work

This means that delegates will be required to produce one of the three certificates outlined below:-

  1. Produce a valid, unexpired Oil and Gas UK (OGUK) offshore medical certificate confirming the delegate’s fitness for offshore work.

OR

  1. A valid, unexpired, medical certificate of fitness to work at sea.

OR

  1. A valid, unexpired offshore medical certificate issued by a body outside of the UK which is recognised as equivalent to the OGUK medical certificate of fitness for offshore work.

In addition to the above the delegate will be required to produce:-

A certificate of fitness to undertake shallow water CA-EBS training issued by a registered OGUK examining doctor.

OR

In the case of a Seafarers Medical with restrictions, produce a statement from an appropriate registered practitioner that the restriction or condition does not result from a respiratory or ENT condition and there is no absolute contraindication to the shallow water delegate’s participation in the training.

AND

On the date on which the delegate is to undertake shallow water CA-EBS training, and prior to entering the water in which the training takes place, the delegate gives to the OPITO-approved Centre a statement, that to the best of the delegate’s knowledge and belief, the delegate has no (current or past) medical condition which makes the delegate unfit to participate in the training.

Turn the tide against plastic.

Reduce Reuse.

There is no Planet B.

Say no to single use plastic.

These are all important statements, and statements that are being said more and more with each passing day. The fight to save our oceans against increasing plastic pollution is growing in importance. People have come to realise that yes, just one person’s actions can make a difference. According to the UN Environment each year eight million tonnes of plastic leaks into the ocean. By 2050 an estimated 99% of seabirds will have ingested plastic. Saying no to plastic straws, bringing reusable mugs to cafes, refilling your sports bottle as opposed to buying single use water bottles are all ways we can take action.

Visit http://cleanseas.org/take-action to get more ideas on what you can do and take the pledge for #CleanSeas. GAC has agreed to support the UN Environment #CleanSeas campaign through taking direct action to reduce single use plastics in the company. Water Safety Awareness Award at the NMCI

Outdoor leisure pursuits are becoming more and more popular each year in Ireland. From weekend ramblers exploring our beautiful coastline, to clubs relishing in their chosen water sport on rivers and the sea, Ireland has much to offer. There’s something for everyone, young and old when it comes to the outdoors which is why now, more than ever, we need to place an emphasis on water safety.

Canadian CanoeSadly, an average of 133 people drown each year in Ireland (visit IWS http://www.iws.ie/about/what-we-do-a-profile-of-iws.1055.html to read more). Irish Water Safety aim to reduce these fatalities by increasing water safety awareness and by changing attitudes and behaviours so that our aquatic environments can be enjoyed with confidence and safety.

SEFtec NMCI Offshore are now conducting the Water Safety Awareness Award for clubs, groups and individuals interested in learning how to stay safe near water.

At just three hours long these courses are ideal for anyone who works near water or enjoys hobbies involving aquatic environments.

Ray Johnston, Operations Manager says “We live on an Island in the North Atlantic, we have an abundance of lakes, rivers and 3,171 kilometres of coastline. The hazards associated with waters on this Atlantic Isle are at times not fully understood until too late. We know well the consequences of not being water aware, “Do not become a case study”. Be water aware.”

Know what to do and how to stay safe… you could save a life.

Book your place on an upcoming course here https://www.nmci.ie/specialised_courses/courseId/48700316/

There are no prerequisites for entry to the course. The Award Certificate is valid for two years.

Bespoke dates are also available and courses can be conducted here at the NMCI or at a location that suits your group, team or club.

Call us today to learn more on 021 4335609 or email services@nmci.ie

Water safety starts in the home but stays with us at work and at play. Don’t become a statistic.
