MCA approved STCW Refresher Training
Basic Safety Training Requirements
Before being assigned any shipboard tasks, anyone employed or engaged in any capacity on board a ship with designated safety or pollution-prevention duties, will be required to successfully complete those elements of approved basic training appropriate to their duties and functions. The four elements of basic training are:
- Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Table A-VI/1-1)
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Table A-VI/1-2)
- Elementary First Aid (STCW Code – Table A-VI/1-3)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW Code – Table A-VI/1-4)
New Legislative Requirements
In conforming to the provisions of STCW Convention Regulation 1/14, and section A-1/14, of the STCW Code, companies must ensure that seafarers assigned to any of their ships have received refresher and updating training as required by the convention.
If a member of your team is serving on board a ship and is qualified in any of the following, they must, as of the 1st of January 2017, have documentary evidence of either having completed the training course or updated their training within the last 5 years.
The 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Code introduced new requirements for seafarers to hold the following certificates of proficiency:
- Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Table A-VI/1-1)
- Updated Proficiency in Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats (STCW Table A-VI/2-1)
- Updated Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Table A-VI/1-2)
- Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW Table A-VI/3)
- Updated Proficiency in Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (STCW Table A-VI/2-2)
Seafarers required to hold any of the certificates of proficiency listed above shall, every five years, provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities specified in the tables.
Seafarers validating their CoC or CoP after 1st January 2017 will be required to submit documentary evidence of having completed such training.
What this means for you & your organisation
From 1st January 2017, Port State Control Officers will require seafarers to provide documentary evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed above. Presenting the documentary evidence obtained on completing an MCA approved refresher course will meet this requirement.
All Companies are required by STCW Reg I/14 to ensure that seafarers assigned to any of its ships have received refresher and updating training required by STCW.

Tested On Humans, RTÉ 2 , Monday December 14th at 9pm
We were delighted to be involved in the filming of the series Tested on Humans which was aired last night on RTÉ 2. Claire and Keith will take the Helicopter Escape Test on the next episode which will air on December 14th. Tested On Humans is a brand new two-part series from ShinAwiL featuring two exciting test subjects radio host Keith Walsh (Breakfast Republic and The Gun Show) and model/slash daredevil Claire Tracey.
Tested On Humans has thrown these two unsuspecting test subjects together to test their mind, body and nerves in a wide range of situations. The tests were formulated by the brightest and best experts in their fields of expertise. Thanks to our human guinea pigs, viewers will get to experience these tests from the comfort of their couch and with zero inconvenience.

Keith and Claire have been tested scientifically, physically mentally and emotionally for your viewing pleasure with tests that include the following:
The Abduction Test – Without warning we arranged a full Tiger Kidnapping of Claire and Keith and put them through what it would feel like in a real abduction situation.
The Mind Test – We delve deep into the brain using NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and install phobias that didn’t exist before.
The Pain Test – We put the age old argument to rest, who can handle pain better? Men? Or women? By making Keith and Claire wear weighted pregnancy bellies for days and then simulating labor pains.
The Extreme Food Test – We explode Keith and Claire’s senses by using two mystery chefs challenging them to come up with inventive ways to eat the most extreme flavors in the world. These include the smelliest fish in the world and the hottest chilies on the planet.
The Clean Test – We forced our two presenters not to wash, we then took readings from their dirty little hands to see exactly what they picked up from the world around them.
The Wingate Test – Both Keith and Claire are pushed to their absolute physical limit when put through their paces with a test designed for professional athletes.
The Helicopter Escape Test – Our two get to feel what it’s like to escape from a simulated helicopter crash at the National Maritime College of Ireland
The Heat Test – Claire and Keith are put through a series of fire scenarios where they will get up close with temperatures up to 1000 degrees and have to save a victim from a smoke filled room.
The Balance and Influence Test – We pit Keith and Claire against each other in Queens University Belfast where they will experience the ultimate in VR technology to test their balance.

High Voltage Management Course
As the High Voltage (Management) course is a commercial course, it is available to book online at the following link: High Voltage (M). Once you have registered and paid online you will appear on the course participants list. Unfortunately, we cannot accept provisional course booking requests as there are limited places available. The course cost is €1,200 per delegate.
This course is suitable for marine engineering officers, electrical or electro-technical officers, engineer surveyors and marine superintendents. The training gives seafarers the essential education and training in high voltage (HV) installations to meet the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency requirements as set out in STCW 2010 Tables A-III/2 and A-III/6 for electrical, electronic and control systems at the management level.
Course Content
The course consists of a blend of classroom and practical training using dedicated facilities to enable students to achieve the following training outcomes:
- Management of HV operations on board a ship, including familiarisation with HV safety rules, procedures and legislation, knowledge of electrical hazards, and completion of safety records and documentation.
- Understanding the HV system and the maintenance of distribution capability, including operational and safety features, function of protection devices, HV switch room arrangements, analysing the protection of marine distribution systems and practical maintenance.
- Identification of faults within an HV system and reconfiguration of the system to maintain electrical supply, including identification of fault levels and conditions, and compiling and implementing a switching plan to isolate a high voltage distribution fault
The courses will commence at 9am on the first day and to ensure a timely start we kindly request all delegates to report to reception no later than 08.45am.
