The Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) has opened the call for applications for Science@Sea research vessel-based training courses. Courses are aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students of marine-related science, technology and engineering, as well as researchers and professionals working in the marine sector.
The two-day training courses will be held between 1st to the 6th of March 2013 in waters off Cork and will offer students the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience onboard the national research vessel RV Celtic Voyager.

Teaching focuses on practical, cross-disciplinary skills such as sample collection and processing, operation of equipment and instrumentation and data acquisition and processing. Other areas essential to working at sea are examined, including survey design and planning, safety at sea, and post-survey analysis and assessment.
“Science@Sea is unique in that it provides participants with the relevant technical knowledge and skills required to work and carry out research at sea. This not only increases national capacity in the marine sector but provides participants with the vital knowledge and skills required for future research and employment” said Dr. Pauhla McGrane, national coordinator of SMART.
Applications and further information are available online at: http://www.smartseaschool.com/content/sas2013.

Tawazun Safety Security and Disaster Management City signs agreements with global training organizations
Abu Dhabi, November 20 2012:
Tawazun Safety Security and Disaster Management City (TSSDMC), a Tawazun Holding subsidiary offering multi-agency training for emergency preparedness and crisis management, has signed agreements with two international training providers.
The first agreement was signed with the Canada-based Ontario Fire Academy (OFA) which will see TSSDMC’s UAE-based Oil & Gas clients taught the skills required to be qualified Level 1 and 2 Fire Fighters. TSSDMC will work with the OFA to design, develop, and deliver short courses and programs as per the internationally-recognized standards of the US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
The second agreement was signed with a Dutch firm, Competency Management Group (CMG), who together with their educational partner the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), will develop curriculum and deliver training that comply with international standards. The training will be provided to TSSDMC’s clients such as the UAE Armed Forces, UAE Navy, Coastguard as well as companies from the Oil &Gas and other sectors.
Khaleefa Al Hemairi, Project Director for TSSDMC said: “We are committed to providing the best possible education and training in the fields of safety, security, emergency preparedness and disaster management by collaborating with a hand-picked selection of international partners. By doing this, we hope to further
strengthen the UAE’s capability to mitigate the impact of natural disaster or man-made crisis and maintain overall business continuity.
“We are confident that with these new agreements with the Ontario Fire Academy and Competency Management Group, we can help prepare UAE industries and communities to effectively respond to emergencies, decrease the number of fatalities and reduce damage to infrastructure and property,” he added.
TSSDMC – together with its collaborative partners – will deliver technical vocational and professional training that fuses scenario-based live training with virtual
simulation.”
