Here at the National Maritime College of Ireland we offer a range of courses which give delegates the opportunity to achieve the STCW Basic Suite of Safety Training certification.

All of our courses are carried out by our highly experienced instructors in our state of the art facility in Ringaskiddy Co.Cork.

Donal Burke Oxygen Depletion

Wednesday April 6th

1300hrs

The topic of discussion will be the findings from a series of oxygen depletion experiments to simulate the speed of oxygen depletion within the enclosed cargo spaces on board a vessel carrying a scrap metal cargo.

The objective of the lecture is to show how these findings can be translated to highlight dangers within ballast tanks, chain lockers, access ways and enclosed spaces in general.

This OPITO approved course is designed to introduce delegates to Specific safety issues and regimes relevant to offshore installations. Delegates also become equip with the basic emergency response knowledge and skills for travelling to and from offshore installations by helicopter, with the use of EBS and CA-EBS emergency equipment.  

The course is a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, during which delegates are required to demonstrate their level of knowledge and understanding of the training programme content.
By the end of this training programme, delegates:

• Have knowledge of the offshore industry including:Understand the processes involved in helicopter travel & be competent in their ability to escape from a ditched or ditching helicopter in an emergency situation.

Living & Working in the Offshore Environment

• Have knowledge of what to do in an evacuation situation: How to respond to alarms, the systems used to achieve successful evacuation and the actions to take in the event of a water entry situation.

• Understand what is meant by emergency First Aid and how to assist in a First Aid situation prior to arrival of the medic.

• Are competent in the use of portable fire extinguishers for basic firefighting and confident in self-rescue techniques used to successfully escape from smoke filled environments.

Don’t get caught out. The Manila Amendments are upon us.

Irish Seafarers and employers of Irish Seafarers, take note!!

The Manila Amendments are very clear, irrespective of the validity of your Certificate of Competency.

Our own legislation is very clear!

Marine Notice No. 02 of 2014 states:

Seafarers holding valid STCW certificates issued prior to 1st January 2012 will have to meet the new requirements in order for their certificates to be revalidated beyond 1st January 2017.

Certificates that have been presented for revalidation since 1st January 2012 have an expiry date of 31st December 2016.

Seafarers revalidating their Certificates of Competency (CoCs) will be required to submit additional evidence to ensure their CoC is valid for service after 31^st December 2016.

In conforming to the provisions of STCW Convention Regulation 1/14, and section A-1/14, of the STCW Code, companies must ensure that seafarers assigned to any of their ships have received refresher/updating training as required by the convention.

If you or a member of your team is serving on board a ship and is qualified in any of the following, they must, as of the 1st of January 2017, have documentary evidence of either having completed the training course or updated their training within the last 5 years.

Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Table A-VI/1-1)

Updated Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats (STCW Table A-VI/2-1)

Updated Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Table A-VI/1-2)

Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW Table A-VI/3)

Updated Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (STCW Table A-VI/2-2)

The law is very clear, do not put your career at risk, you cannot proceed to sea after January 1^st 2017 without having complied with the Manila Amendments.

IASST Conference at NMCI

The IASST is an association of safety and survival training organizations whose mission is: To facilitate the exchange of information on matters relating to safety in the maritime environment and to promote continuous improvement in safety and survival training internationally. The IASST aims to improve safety and survival training by sharing of best practice information between its members.

The National Maritime College of Ireland, as members of IASST, are delighted to announce that they will be hosting the 67th International IASST Meeting & Conference on the 19th to 20^th of October 2015 at the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy.
