The Marine Industry Awards 2016, in association with SeaFest, take place in the Radisson Blu Galway, on Thursday 30^th June. The event promises to bring together all sub-sectors of the industry in Ireland, and highlight their important contribution to the Irish economy. The National Maritime College of Ireland are the proud patron of the event, and I encourage every one of you to enter and showcase your role.

High Voltage

High Voltage (Management)

STCW’95 & non STCW’95

June 13th 2016

High Voltage (Management) is a 5 day course which gives seafarers the essential education and training in high voltage (HV) installations to meet the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency requirements as set out in STCW 2010 Tables A-III/2 and A-III/6 for electrical, electronic and control systems at the management level.

The course focuses on both classroom and practical training on The National Maritime College of Irelands state of the art campus, located in Ringaskiddy Co. Cork. Our top notch training facilities as well as our highly experienced instructors allows our delegates the opportunity to achieve the following training outcomes:

Management of HV operations on board a ship, including

Familiarization with HV Safety Rules.

Procedures and Legislation, Knowledge of Electrical Hazards.

Completion of Safety Records and Documentation.

Understanding the HV system and the maintenance of distribution capability, including

Operational and Safety Features.

Function of Protection Devices.

HV Switch Room Arrangements.

Analysing the Protection of Marine Distribution Systems.

Practical Maintenance.

Identification of faults within an HV system and reconfiguration of the system to maintain electrical supply, including

Identification of Fault Levels and Conditions,

Compiling and Implementing a Switching Plan to Isolate a High Voltage Distribution Fault.

Here at the National Maritime College of Ireland we offer a range of courses which give delegates the opportunity to achieve the STCW Basic Suite of Safety Training certification.

National Maritime College of Ireland

This OPITO approved course is designed to introduce delegates to Specific safety issues and regimes relevant to offshore installations. Delegates also become equip with the basic emergency response knowledge and skills for travelling to and from offshore installations by helicopter, with the use of EBS and CA-EBS emergency equipment.  

The course is a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, during which delegates are required to demonstrate their level of knowledge and understanding of the training programme content.
By the end of this training programme, delegates:

• Have knowledge of the offshore industry including:Understand the processes involved in helicopter travel & be competent in their ability to escape from a ditched or ditching helicopter in an emergency situation.

How Offshore Safety is Regulated

Living & Working in the Offshore Environment

• Have knowledge of what to do in an evacuation situation: How to respond to alarms, the systems used to achieve successful evacuation and the actions to take in the event of a water entry situation.

• Understand what is meant by emergency First Aid and how to assist in a First Aid situation prior to arrival of the medic.

• Are competent in the use of portable fire extinguishers for basic firefighting and confident in self-rescue techniques used to successfully escape from smoke filled environments.
