NMCI Open Day; Thursday Oct 26th 2017

Ireland has a proud maritime tradition and the National Maritime College of Ireland is offering an opportunity to build on that at its Open Day, the annual event held in the College at Ringaskiddy.

 

It will take place this Thursday, October 26, when the College opens its doors to the public who can see the top, international state-of-the-art facilities which it has. They are a powerful statement of the importance of the maritime sector to this island nation and impressive to see.

 

This is a day when anyone interested in a career at sea can pursue the many options available in a wide, varied and challenging sector which offers huge opportunities.

 

Representatives from international shipping companies and maritime organisations will be present to meet and discuss available careers, providing information to visitors about jobs throughout the wide sphere of the maritime industry, both at sea and ashore.

 

There will be Presentations for schools and their pupils on Marine Course opportunities at the NMCI.

 

The Open Day will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with tours of training facilities at the college throughout the day and, in the Events Hall, the opportunity to visit international maritime companies and organisations.

Position: Administrator

The administrator will report directly to the Administration Manager.

Description of the Position

Reporting to the Admin Manager of NMCI Services, the Administrator is a member of the core NMCIS Team providing administration, course coordination and business support for NMCI Services and its associated joint venture company SNO Ltd & GTSS Ltd.

NB Note: For the initial six months the Administrator will work under the direct supervision of the established Office Administrator so as to acquire the requisite knowledge & experience to perform the role to perform efficiently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The administrator’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following;
  • Receive inbound calls and emails from current and new customers/companies.
  • Responsible for the administration process from booking through to certification and registration into the OPITO Vantage system and CMS.
  • Responsible for classroom/facility bookings for scheduled and bespoke course bookings
  • Represent NMCIS as a member on the college’s Internal Audit team and shall be responsible for completing internal audits on main scheme and NMCIS commercial courses
  • Responsible for travel templates and organising client accommodation & transfers ahead of courses or board meetings.
  • Preparing administration files for instructors before beginning course.
  • Put together and deliver course packs where appropriate.
  • Prepare scripts/handouts for courses
  • Meet performance targets for speed, efficiency, sales and quality;
  • Ensure all relevant communications, records and data are updated and recorded;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry developments and updates;
  • Create trust and confidence when building a rapport with customers to effectively close each booking and retain customer loyalty, this includes reception duties for course registration.
  • Represent GTSS and NMCI by ensuring each customer receives a friendly and engaging and efficient experience;
  • Compile reports as and when required by the GAC Management Team;
  • Work as part of a team supporting colleagues where necessary;
  • Report any non-conformances to Management immediately in order to ensure that corrective action is carried out to prevent recurrence and insure continuous improvement.
  • Adhere to strict data protection and confidentiality laws;
  • Participate in any required NMCI training.
  • Liaising with both the GTSS Marketing Executive & the Administration Manager to support the planning of all commercial courses
  • Liaising with Lecturers, instructors to co-ordinate the efficient running of courses.
  • Liaising with Finance regarding pricing of courses.
  • Liaising with various individuals from companies on course details, numbers, requests etc.
  • Liaising with catering staff & process canteen function forms.
  • Be responsible for the replenishment of stationary at the NMCIS Ops office and postal duties.
  • Fill out purchase Requisitions where appropriate & required.
  • Certification, Catering Function Forms.
  • Completion of Solas forms and liaising with Solas officers as required.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned i.e.
Requirements

Essential:

  • 3 years relevant administration experience.
  • Good planning, organisational and communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to ask probing questions, understand concerns, and overcome objections;
  • Strong work ethic and self-starter, able to effectively manage multiple priorities and adapt to change within a fast-paced business environment;
  • Must possess a professional and friendly attitude and be able to quickly develop a rapport with customers over the phone;
  • Ability to learn and navigate new software quickly;
  • Ability to type 30 wpm+;

Desirable:

  • ISO 9001 Certification & Auditing Skills

Deputy Martin Kenny:  

“More than 400 people who have been trained by the National Maritime College of Ireland over the past year or so now find that they are not being certified. If this situation is not resolved, all of these people will be out of work from 1 January 2017. They will be unable to take up positions in Ireland or anywhere else in the world. It is intolerable that these people cannot be employed on any vessel anywhere until they get this certification in place. There seems to be some kind of stand-off between the Marine Survey Office, which is part of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, and the National Maritime College of Ireland. We need to get this resolved as quickly as possible. Many of these people cannot go anywhere else in the world to get these courses. They took these courses in good faith and expected that everything would be all right. It is intolerable that they have been left out in the cold in this manner. I implore the Minister to sort out this problem as a matter of urgency. It needs to be done immediately in order that people can be reassured. No one is aware of any reason this situation has not been resolved up to now”

 

Deputy Martin Ferris : 

Up to 400 seafarers and 20 lecturers are poised to lose their jobs on 1 January 2017. Their jobs will be at risk unless we resolve a dispute between the National Maritime College of Ireland and the Marine Survey Office. In February 2015, the National Maritime College of Ireland made a submission to the Marine Survey Office seeking approval of a refresher course, but it has not yet received such approval. Following the Marine Survey Office’s failure to respond, the National Maritime College of Ireland approached the UK Marine and Coastguard Agency through a dedicated maritime offshore joint venture training company. The UK agency is highly regarded globally and has approved courses undertaken in a number of EU member states, including France, Spain, the Netherlands and Croatia. Every member state recognises the appropriate certificates issued by other member states. The seafaring upgrade that was carried out by the UK Marine and Coastguard Agency in conjunction with the National Maritime College of Ireland relates to on-board safety and basic seafaring safety skills. The Minister can resolve the stand-off that has developed as a consequence of all this. He needs to convince the Marine Survey Office of the legitimacy of the refresher courses that were provided by the UK Marine and Coastguard Agency. The agency, which is recognised globally, came here to provide these courses, and 400 seafarers took part in them.

High Voltage (Management) is a 5 day course which gives seafarers the essential education and training in high voltage (HV) installations to meet the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency requirements as set out in STCW 2010 Tables A-III/2 and A-III/6 for electrical, electronic and control systems at the management level.

 

The course focuses on both classroom and practical training on The National Maritime College of Irelands state of the art campus, located in Ringaskiddy Co. Cork. Our top notch training facilities as well as our highly experienced instructors allows our delegates the opportunity to achieve the following training outcomes:

                       

Management of HV operations on board a ship, including

Familiarization with HV Safety Rules.
